Discipline
Policy
The Stadium School’s
Discipline Policy is in accordance with BCPSS code of conduct and discipline
code.
It is the school’s belief and
philosophy that good instruction guides discipline, meaning the better one is
prepared to teach, with high expectations and engaging and interesting lessons,
the better the atmosphere of learning and cooperation will be.
Moreover, there are a host of
discipline strategies and interventions that can be used in replace of
suspension. Suspension should be the
last option and used for only serious infractions, i.e., assault, drugs,
harassment, and weapons. In addition to
good instruction, TSS encourages the use of peer mediation, timeout, social
skill training, alterative classroom (detention), counseling, parent/teacher
conference, parent contact (phone call/letters) tutoring, Student Support
Services, etc.
It is also the school’s
belief that students should be supervised at all time, i.e., classrooms,
mini-courses, media center, outside activities, etc. No students should receive permission from
a staff member to work in a room without being monitored or supervised. Any student in an unsupervised area will
automatically receive a one-day suspension.
The Director is responsible
for implementing and enforcing the school’s discipline policy, but the Dean
of Student Support Services is his designee. Each staff member is responsible for
completing a referral form for any incident deemed out of the control of the
Teacher Classroom-Management System. The
designee will follow the BCPSS guideline for discipline consequences,
documentation and date entry.
Beyond the Discipline Policy
Please note TSS accepts
students and their parents into our learning community when there is a unified
partnership toward achieving the common goal of providing the best educational
service to every student. In order
for this partnership to continue and grow students and parents are requested to
do the following:
1. Students should come to
school on a regular basis and be on time, as outlined in the Attendance
Guideline sheet.
2. Students should view their
education and academics as the first reason to come to and be in school.
3. Students and parents are
responsible for their actions that affect the community in negative ways, e.g.,
multiple fights, disruptions, harassment, vandalism, disrespect to adults
and/or peers.
4. Parents should communicate
with teachers on weekly basis using the communication log.
5. Parents should contribute
talents and/or time to TSS by volunteering 20 hours per year.
The decision to
administratively transfer a student to his or her zone school is the right of
The Stadium School administration, however, this right will only be exercised
when a student and/or parent does not adhere to the philosophy of community and
the precepts listed above.
Alternative Discipline/Actions for Challenged Students
1. Student behavior must be documented by teachers, via the referral form or some other document.
2. Students with consistent documentation that identifies behaviors that need supplemental services may be referred to Student Support Team and/or Northeast Community Organization Youth Service Bureau (NECO).
3. Parents need to be brought into the equation and held accountable for their child's behavior by using their 20 volunteer hours to aid in servicing their child in issues of discipline. Help in classrooms and at dismissal.
4. The Stadium School invokes the right to maintain a safe school environment, as agreed in the community contract, by asking parents to bring their child home for the day in the event of an incident of violent or disruptive behavior.
5. Actions that constitute immediate removal from the school (suspension, long-term suspension, expulsion, transfers): bomb threats, arson, possession of weapons, sexual assault, drug possession, assaulting staff, assault, theft . . .
6. Teacher related classroom issues: insubordination, cheating, inappropriate language, opposition/defiant behavior.
7. Teacher classroom resolutions: name on board, sent to
supporting teacher, i.e., to complete work in alternative setting (grade level
‘team’ support), call home from classroom, detention w/accompanying assignment after
school (2:50 pm) or during mini course period (?)
8. Awards for perfect attendance, honor roll/deans list, community service, coupons for school store for academic success, positive phone calls or letters home, uniform pass, trophies.
Below is a Tier System for Handling Discipline. It is not an exact interpretation for handling discipline infraction. TSS is a small school, with the intent to be personally involved and committed to servicing the whole child and his/her parent. Thus, in particular instances the designee may choose to handle the infraction differently than the information outlined below:
